Connecticut Food Bank Joins New Haven Summer Meals Program

Six Mobile Pantry Sites in City Will Offer Fresh Food to People in Need

 

WALLINGFORD, CONN., June 30, 2016 – The Connecticut Food Bank will offer six mobile food distribution sites as part of the City of New Haven’s Summer Meals program, beginning Tuesday, July 5, and running through Thursday, September 1. The distributions will be bi-weekly at each site. The distributions are aimed at addressing the increased need for food that families and children face in summer months when school meal programs end and when donations to food pantries are often at their lowest.

 

The Connecticut Food Bank will have volunteers at each site distributing fresh and nonperishable foods to people in need. The sites are coordinated with six of the sites where the City of New Haven is offering its Summer Meals for children program.

 

“We are joining once again with the City’s meals distribution team to distribute additional food to help people in the community,” said Connecticut Food Bank CEO Bernie Beaudreau. “Unfortunately, the need for food assistance in New Haven – and in so many communities across the state – remains high.”

 

Beaudreau said the Connecticut Food Bank distributions will be at the same time as the City’s meals distributions but are open to all who are in need. “The City’s program is focused on children, who benefit from the developmental and educational advantages that nutritious food helps to provide, but we also know that families and individuals of all ages are often in need of food and this is a great opportunity to supplement this program with foods that recipients can take home to prepare over several days,” Beaudreau said.

 

Beaudreau said the food bank continues to recruit volunteers to help at the distribution sites. “No special skills are needed beyond the desire to help neighbors in need.”

The six Connecticut Food Bank New Haven summer meals sites will operate every other Tuesday or Thursday. The complete schedule is at www.ctfoodbank.org/summermeals. Site locations are:

 

  • Scantlebury Park on Ashmun Street (alternating Tuesdays 5:30PM to 6:30PM)
  • Katherine Brennan School, 200 Wilmot Road (alternating Thursdays 3:45PM to 4:45PM)
  • South Genessee Park, at 35 Genessee Street (alternating Thursdays 6:00PM to 6:45PM)
  • Cornell Scott Hill Health Center, 400 Columbus Avenue (alternating Tuesdays 4:45PM to 5:45PM)
  • Lincoln-Bassett splash pad, Ivy and Butler Streets near Lincoln-Bassett School
    (alternating Thursdays 4:00PM to 4:45PM)
  • John Martinez School at 100 James Street (alternating Tuesdays 6:15PM to 7:00PM)
